Collingwood has gone down to Frankston by 36 points in the Round 18 VFL clash at Kinetic Stadium.
In what was a highly anticipated encounter due to the inclusions of returning AFL-listed Magpies Jordan De Goey, Bobby Hill, Billy Frampton, Finlay Macrae and Mason Cox, the grandstands of Kinetic Stadium were full to the brim and the local crowd liked what they saw as the Dolphins ran out 36-point winners.
The Pies started hot in what was a frenetic opening period of the game. Key forward Ash Johnson was on target with the Magpies’ first of the Saturday night encounter.
It was then the moment the Collingwood fans were hoping for when Bobby Hill kicked his first goal of the evening. After young ruck Oscar Steene won the advantage from a throw in on centre wing, Hill gathered the ball before involving fellow AFL-listed Pie Jordan De Goey.
Hill continued to run and took the handball receive from De Goey before firing from 40 metres out on a slight angle to boot a special goal, ending in a trademark celebration on the boundary line.
It was Hill again on the quarter time siren, as Bobby booted his second of the night by selling the dummy to his Frankston opponent before finishing from beyond 50 metres.
From there, it was all Frankston.
The Dolphins well and truly turned the tide in front of 5,561 at their home venue, with their contest work the standout.
Frankston took control across the second and third quarters and were plus 16 on contested possessions across those quarters alone.
The margin blew out to as much as 50-points, before Collingwood minimised the damage in the final term thanks to goals from Josh Bennetts, Sam Glover, Bobby Hill, Finlay Macrae and Oscar Steene.
The numbers
In his first encounter since Round 15 of the AFL season, Bobby Hill returned to his best with three important goals. The small forward gathered the ball 13 times and was impressive in the forward half.
After returning from an Achillies injury and concussion, Jordan De Goey had 19 disposals, including nine contested possessions, five tackles and a clearance while playing limited minutes. Billy Frampton, also on restricted game time, had nine disposals.
After not playing since the Round 5 VFL clash against Brisbane due to a shoulder injury, Finlay Macrae was straight back into action, gathering 25 disposals, kicking one goal and four inside-50’s.
21-year-old ruck Oscar Steene led the game for hit outs with 36, giving the Magpies first use of the footy on multiple occasions.
VFL-listed Magpie and former Hawk Josh Bennetts kicked two goals to round out the stat sheet for Collingwood.
The sixth placed Collingwood now turn their attention to next Saturday afternoon's clash against Williamstown at DSV Stadium.
