A come-from-behind win by the Pies’ AFL side has headlined a week of clashes against historical rivals Carlton.
Proceedings kicked off on Thursday night at the MCG as the Pies and Blues took to the field for the Peter Mac Cup, with the first quarter evenly poised.
Carlton would race out of the blocks in the second term however, kicking four goals to one to open up a 14-point half time lead.
The black and white had been pushing forward, however were struggling to convert, with their scoreline sitting at 3.9 at the main break.
A response was needed upon the resumption, but it was the Blues who would find the big sticks just 19 seconds into the premiership quarter, followed by three consecutive behinds as the Pies hung in the contest.
Majors to Jamie Elliott and Tim Membrey sparked the black and white as the third term went on, however the margin had been extended to 18 points by three-quarter time.
But that was all before Nick Daicos took control. The Pies’ Vice-captain, who was playing his 100th game, had been typically prolific through three quarters, but upon the restart for the final term he took things up a notch.
Collecting three disposals inside the first 20 seconds of the final quarter, Daicos kicked the first goal of the term to inspire majors from Oscar Steene, Will Hayes and Pat Lipinski, as the Pies took the lead after barely five minutes of play.
Two more goals to Elliott kept the Pies in the box seat as the quarter wore on, however the Blues weren’t going to lie down, with Mitch McGovern’s third major keeping the margin at single figures.
Membrey had another major for the Pies shortly after in what was hoped to be the sealer, however another Blues goal kept things tense right to the very last second.
With the ball deep in the Blues’ attacking fifty with under a minute to play, a late free kick was awarded to the home side which gave them a chance to tie the scores after the siren.
But things would go the way of the black and white, with a post-siren behind confirming a famous five-point win for the Pies.
Daicos was the clear best on ground with 39 touches, while Harry Perryman and Lipinksi (both 27 disposals) impressed alongside Elliott with his triumvirate of majors.
The AFL side’s win set the tone for what was hoped to be a clean sweep of the Blues the next day, as the VFL Pies took on the Blues at Ikon Park under Friday night lights.
It wasn’t to be though, as a blistering first half from Carlton set up their 31-point win.
The Pies could only manage six behinds in the first half to go into the main break 44 points in arrears.
A strong third term with five goals to three kept them in the contest with a quarter to play, however the damage had been done in the first half.
First-year player Sam Swadling was impressive for the black and white with 29 touches, while Jack Buller continued his early season form with two majors.
VFL-listed midfielders Josh Browne (27 disposals) and Oskar Faulkhead (23 touches) also impressed.
Both of Collingwood’s sides will now take on Essendon in their traditional Anzac week clashes. The VFL clash will take place on Anzac Eve in an early-afternoon match on Friday, while the AFL game will be staged on Saturday on Anzac Day for the 31st time.
