A Thursday night draw and a Friday night that went down to the wire headlined the Pies’ clashes against the Hawks last week.
The AFL match that opened Round 8 ended with scores level for the first time in season 2026, with Hawthorn kicking a goal after the siren to leave the teams 93 apiece.
The Pies started hot with a five-goal to one first term, with Jordan De Goey kicking two of those majors.
The second quarter was a more even contest in what was brewing as a classic, with the black and white leading by five points at the main break.
Only a Hawthorn goal milliseconds before the siren would see the Pies trail at three-quarter time, with the two-point deficit quickly reined in as Jamie Elliott goaled early in the final quarter.
His second of the final term and third for the match a few minutes later would extend the lead past two possessions as the fourth quarter wore on, but the Hawks wouldn’t go away.
The arm wrestle looked to be going in favour of the Pies when Steele Sidebottom converted a 50-metre penalty into a crucial major in the 25th minute of the final quarter, however a seven-point play by the Hawks resulted in the scores being all tied up.
The Pies had some standout players with Nick Daicos (34 touches) and Dan Houston (32 touches) controlling the ball, while Elliott’s three goals were backed up by pairs of majors to De Goey and Will Hayes.
While not a win, the two points secured out of the match helped the Pies entrench themselves in eighth position ahead of a huge matchup with sixth-placed Geelong this Saturday night.
Following on from the draw, the Pies took on the Box Hill Hawks in a Friday night VFL prime time clash.
A similarly see-sawing contest to the AFL game 24 hours earlier, the Pies trailed by seven points at quarter time before taking a three-point lead to the main break.
That was extended to a nine-point margin on the back of a five-goal third term, as Ed Allan and Bobby Hill stamped their authority on the match.
It wasn’t enough however, with the Hawks kicking four consecutive goals to open the final term and holding on for a nine-point victory.
Allan (28 touches and two goals), Hill (three goals) and Charlie West (two goals) were the standout performers on the night.
The VFL side will also take on Geelong this week, hosting the Cats at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon.
