The last time the Magpies managed to do so was between round one 1991 and round three 1994.
Impressive, yes, but it will take several years if the Pies are to equal their all-time record against the Doggies – they won 14 consecutive games against them between 1977 and 1983.
As the only club to contest each of the last seven finals series, it comes as little surprise that Collingwood maintains (or held) several impressive winning streaks against several clubs.
Current streaks of note (four or more games in a row)
Six v Richmond (R3 2008 to R4 2013)
Six v Port Adelaide (R20 2008 to R4 2012)
Six v Western Bulldogs (R1 2010 to R12 2013)
Five v Adelaide (R19 2009 to R9 2012)
Five v St Kilda (GF Replay 2010 to R6 2013)
Notable: Collingwood has won its last three games against Geelong. Not a massive amount by any stretch, but it’s worth remembering that no club has done so against the Cats since their era of domination began in round six, 2007.
The Magpies have also established a strong record against Melbourne during a difficult period for the Dees. Since Melbourne’s narrow win on the Queen’s Birthday in 2007, Collingwood has notched four points on all bar one occasion. But even then it still didn’t lose. We’re referring, of course, to the Queen’s Birthday draw in round 12, 2010.
Recent streaks
Eleven v Sydney (R12 2006 to R20 2012 – broken in the Preliminary Final last season)
Seven v Essendon (R14 2009 to R23 2012 – broken in R5 this season)
Seven v West Coast (SF 2007 to R13 2012 – broken in R22 last season)
Four v Fremantle (R13 2009 to R14 2012 – broken in R7 this season)
Four v North Melbourne (R6 2009 to R16 2011 – broken in R21 last season)
The flipside
When it comes to streaks, Collingwood’s one negative in recent years when has been its inability to break Hawthorn’s stranglehold. Since the Hawks returned to finals contention, the Maggies have only beaten them on three occasions (once in 2010 and twice in 2011). Since Luke Ball broke the Hawks’ hearts with his last gasp goal in the ’11 Preliminary Final, the brown and gold has won the past four meetings between the two clubs including last year’s Qualifying Final.
But if you want to take it further, the Pies have won only nine of 23 games against Hawthorn in the 21st Century and have recorded successive victories against them only twice (four between 2004 and 2006 and two in 2011).
