Wellingham was one of the Pies' best as the black and white army thrashed the Bombers by 65 points. He said listening to an ardent Collingwood fan who served for his country had struck a chord.
"The speech before the game hit home hardest," Wellingham told collingwoodfc.com.au.
"We had a veteran come in called John. He's a Collingwood supporter and has been since 1926.
"He came and made a speech about hard work and he was really inspiring.
"When you're standing there, with your arms linked up and the last post is being played, it's definitely a big occasion."

Wellingham, who made his AFL debut in the 2008 Anzac Day clash, said he still took a pragmatic approach into the clash.
"I didn't really think about how well I was going to perform [on the big stage], because you've got to perform whether it's a big game or a small game," he said.
"I think I took a lot from that fact that my first game was on Anzac Day and it was a big deal then, but it was just another game for four points today."

Wellingham attributed his impressive start to the season to improved core strength and strength over the summer, which has allowed him to play inside and outside midfield roles.
"Maturity and a solid, first full pre-season has helped me," he said.
"I had no injuries and knowing what I've got to do after 30-odd games now … it definitely helps your confidence."
Wellingham said a dominant first term was the catalyst for a memorable Anzac Day.
"After the first quarter, we just wanted to make sure we put the foot on the throat," he said.
