One of the most heartbreaking stories of last season was the tragic death of Varcoe’s younger sister Maggie just days after the final round. The veteran runner made a vow not to let down his club – his ‘second family’ – and he didn’t, playing all four finals thereafter and kicking a goal on each occasion, twice scoring the Pies’ first major.
