Nick Daicos today confirmed his decision to join Collingwood as a father-son selection in the 2021 national draft.
Son of Collingwood great Peter Daicos, Nick will join his talented brother Josh in black and white.
Collingwood has guaranteed the Daicos family that it will meet any bid on Nick, thereby making certain of his passage to the Pies.
Daicos will become the club’s fourth first-round pick across a 12-month period, following three first round selections in last year’s draft (Ollie Henry, Finlay Macrae and Reef McInnes).
A highly talented junior who has had senior exposure through Collingwood’s VFL program, Daicos will add to a critical mass of young talent being assembled by the club.
Apart from Henry, Macrae and McInnes, Caleb Poulter, Liam McMahon and Beau McCreery were members of the 2020 national draft class. Rookies Isaac Chugg and Jack Ginnivan, and mid-season recruits Ash Johnson and Aiden Begg, have since joined the club.
“Collingwood is my family’s football home and I’m thrilled to be coming,” Daicos said.
“I like the sense of tradition but it is also my start, the chance to write my own chapter in the black and white.
“I know quite a few of the boys and it’s also exciting to know that I will be joining a wider group of younger players who I can share my start with. It will be great to build something together.”
Collingwood GM of Football, Graham Wright, played with Peter Daicos at Collingwood. The two shared in the 1990 premiership.
“It’s pleasing for our members, fans, and Nick’s future teammates that he has committed to nominating us under the father-son rule in October, and our commitment is to match any bid for him in the national draft come November,” Wright said.
“Nick’s a highly talented midfielder – he has outstanding skills, hits the scoreboard and works hard at his game.
“Like all young players, he has work to do but he is certainly talented and committed to his craft and his club, which is something our fans and his team-mates will appreciate. He will slot in nicely with our young group.
“We are confident Nick will receive a first-rate football education at Collingwood and have a long and distinguished career. We look forward to officially welcoming him later this year.”
