Collingwood’s VFLW team won their first match of the season 6.6 (42) against North Melbourne 5.0 (30) in a four quarter effort.

The Magpies lead from the start with Sabrina Frederick’s first goal of the day leading the momentum early.

In the second quarter the Pies slot another three goals; two of which were from Frederick and one from Mollie Emond.

The midfield and forwards worked well together to create space to obtain scoring opportunities, something the team struggled to do in round one.

Coach Chloe McMillian stated that the team were able to develop a lot of attack in the forward half which was the main difference from last week.

The second half proved a bit more challenging with North Melbourne scoring three unanswered goals, narrowing the margin to only five points at three quarter time.

Following a behind from Collingwood and a goal from North Melbourne, the scores were level with 10 minutes to go.

A quick reply from Elisabeth Jackson lifted their confidence with only minutes remaining. Frederick put the cherry on the top of a best-on-ground performance with the goal of the day; a snap from the boundary, cementing the win.

McMillian was impressed with how the team performed, especially in the last part of the match.

“We stood up to the challenge in the last quarter. It was really positive that we were able to respond when we really got challenged,” McMillian said.

It was a great improvement from round one, however, McMillian believes the team are capable of more.

“Last week we had to go back to the basics which is what let us down. For patches we were able to do it today which will be a huge focus for us this week,” McMillian said.

Collingwood will take on Williamstown in round 3 at 9:45am Sunday 27th February at Victoria Park.

This match will be free entry, before the AFLW game later in the afternoon. It will also be livestreamed on the VFLW YouTube Channel.
