Adam Treloar couldn’t be more excited to see fellow basketball lover and former college athlete Jack Madgen debut for Collingwood on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old elevated rookie will play in defence at the SCG in the absence of the injured Jeremy Howe and Matthew Scharenberg. And Treloar has complete faith he will fill the hole with distinction.

“Madge is one of the most impressive characters you would meet,” the injured midfielder said on Collingwood Media podcast ‘Sports Galore’.

“I reckon he’s going to come out and do an awesome job.

“It won’t be the first and last time you see him. He’s going to have a successful career with us.”

While the pair are friends now, Treloar was aware of the surname before he even got to know his new teammate.

Madgen’s brother Ben is an Australian basketballer who played for the Sydney Kings and was watched by Treloar while he was playing for the GWS Giants.

The younger sibling, Jack has spent time in the NBL himself with the Cairns Taipans, while also carving out a successful career with Delta State University in the US.

At 25, Treloar believes he possesses traits not normally evident in a first-year rookie.

“He has very high leadership qualities,” he said.

“He’s very confident that he’ll get the job done.”

Debutant aside, the mission to get the job done will extend to the rest of the travelling party in Sydney.

Treloar expects the home side to be breathing fire after back-to-back narrow defeats.

“If they want to keep their finals chances alive… they’re going to have to come out and have a red-hot crack.

“They’re probably the most well-respected team in the competition.”

Collingwood’s clash with Sydney will kick off at 7.25pm. Treloar will remain in Melbourne as he continues his rehab from hamstring injuries sustained in a round 14 win over Carlton.
