A draw at the ‘G, a win in the VFLW and narrow losses in the AFLW and VFL. It was a wild weekend of action for the Pies.
With all four football sides in action for official matches for the only and only team this year, results were happening everything you looked across Saturday.
At the home of footy for the Pies’ Round 23 AFL clash, there was an eerily familiar denouement to the game, with scores tied against the Hawks for the second time this season.
In a game where the result was never certain, it was perhaps fitting that the points were shared.
The black and white started strongly headlined by a five-goal to one second term, which set up a 22-point lead at the main break.
Hawthorn would surge in the third quarter however, taking the lead by the final change.
The resilient Pies fought their way back in the last quarter, kicking four quick goals between the seven and 14 minute mark, to get the game back on their terms.
It would go right down to the wire, with Hawthorn’s Dylan Moore again having the game on his boot, with any score handing the Hawks victory.
As his set shot sailed towards the city end goals, a minor score looked inevitable until first-year star Sam Swadling smartly fisted the ball back into play, saving any score and securing two premiership points for the black and white.
In a league first, the tied scores meant it was the first time two sides have drawn twice in the same season.
With only this Friday’s final home and away season clash against Brisbane to come, the Pies cannot finish lower than ninth, as they sit in eighth place – six points ahead of 10th-placed Carlton.
A win would secure a home Wildcard Final at the MCG, while they can remain eighth if Melbourne defeat the Western Bulldogs in Round 24.
The Club’s only win for the weekend came via the VFLW side, who triumphed over Port Melbourne by two points.
Needing a win to keep their hopes of finishing in top spot alive, it was tense contest at ETU Stadium that could have gone either way.
Putting in a whole team performance, the Pies held their nerve to secure the crucial win.
Amelia Peck’s three goals led the way, while Tahlia Sanger (21 touches), Abbey Tregellis (20 touches) and Abbey McDonald (20 touches) all played their roles.
Later at the ground, the two Clubs’ VFL sides took each other on, with Port Melbourne ending the Pies’ season.
Despite the 26-point defeat, there were plenty of positives for the young Collingwood squad, with first-year forward Jai Saxena kicking a career-high five goals.
Mid-season draftee Mitch Podhajski added four more to his season tally, bringing up 50 for the year when combining his time with Coburg earlier in the year.
Harry Demattia (26 disposals) and Tyan Prindable (22 touches) also impressed, as the black and white’s season ended with a 7-11 ledger.
Saturday also saw the Pies’ AFLW campaign kick off, with Richmond Round 1 at Ikon Park.
Unlikely goals to Tarni White and recruit Ariana Hetherington gave the Pies a positive start and an early lead, however the Tigers went into half time ahead by six points.
A tough third term saw Richmond extend their lead and keep the Pies goalless, leaving them with too much to do in the final quarter.
Richmond ran out winners by 18 points, however strong showings from White (25 disposals) and second-year Pie Violet Patterson (23 touches) were encouraging signs.
Victoria Park will host the Pies’ first home game of 2026 this Saturday, when Fremantle come to town.
