Collingwood midfielder Sam Swadling has been named the Round 23 Telstra AFL Rising Star nominee following an impressive performance against Hawthorn on Saturday night.

The 19-year-old produced a career-best performance, collecting 29 disposals and seven intercept possessions as the Pies played a thrilling game to draw with the Hawks, the second time this year.

Selected with Pick 37 in last year’s national draft, Swadling has quickly established himself as an exciting young talent, hitting the scoreboard five times in his past seven games.

Since making his AFL debut in Round 15 against Port Adelaide, the Western Australian product has featured in seven games for the Pies, earning his opportunity through consistent performances in the VFL resulting in making an immediate impact at senior level.

Collingwood’s Executive General Manager of Football Charlie Gardiner congratulated Swadling on his nomination.

“Sam has earned this nomination through the way he’s gone about his football since making his debut, and we congratulate him on this thoroughly deserved achievement.

“He has impressed us in the way in which he has performed at the AFL level so early in his career.

“Saturday night was another impressive performance, and we’re excited to see him continue to develop.”
