Collingwood defender Harry O’Brien has committed to a one-year contract extension, tying him to the Magpies until at least the end of the 2012 season.

The 24-year-old, who enjoyed a fine 2010 season in which he played in the Magpies’ premiership and was named in the All Australian team, was elevated from the rookie-list at the end of 2006 and has played 111 AFL games.

O’Brien’s commitment comes after captain Nick Maxwell signed a two-year contract extension towards the end of 2010.

“It’s very exciting and also a bit of a relief, because I can put that behind me and really concentrate on the on-field stuff in 2011,” O’Brien told CTV.

“I want to play my football at the Collingwood Football Club. We have an opportunity here, and we all feel it, that we can have sustained success.

“It has been an amazing journey. I haven’t had too much time to reflect on it, I think you do that at the end of the career, but I know I’ve had to really work hard to get to this position, and I know I’ve got to continue to work hard to try and improve. I’m extremely excited about what the future holds for this football club.”

O’Brien was originally a second-round rookie draft selection in 2004 after making his own way from the Claremont Football Club in Western Australia to trial with the Magpies.

He has blossomed into one of the Magpies’ best and most durable players, and has an active streak of 86 consecutive AFL matches.

Twice he has finished in the top five in the Copeland Trophy voting (5th - 2008, 4th - 2009), and he capped off his great 2010 with another top 10 best-and-fairest finish in a very strong field. He was also the recipient of the Darren Millane Trophy as best clubman in 2009.
