Tom Phillips and Brodie Grundy were among Collingwood's leading ball-winners in the narrow loss to Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Saturday evening.

Phillips finished with 32 disposals, 10 marks and a goal.

Grundy, who had to shoulder the bulk of the rucking load after Ben Reid was a late withdrawal and Darcy Moore suffered a hamstring injury, ended the game with 20 disposals, 45 hit-outs and two goals.

Pies skipper Scott Pendlebury was another key performer. On a day when he had to act as fill-in ruckman at times, the gun midfielder racked up 30 disposals, six inside-50s and one hit-out.

Playing across half-back, Matt Scharenberg also won plenty of the ball in his first AFL game for the season.
