In the lead up to Friday night’s unfurling of the premiership flag, Collingwood’s last four premiership captains caught up for a special gathering to share their football memories.

Nick Maxwell, Tony Shaw, Murray Weideman and Lou Richards were all in one room recounting stories spanning over 60 years.

“I think it’s special no matter what the timing of it was,” Maxwell told CTV.

“Just to see and meet the three of them all together.  It’s hard for me to contemplate and comprehend because those three guys are a big part of the history of the Collingwood Football Club.”

Richards, 88, and Weideman, 75, both believe that the current Collingwood side was the best they have witnessed.

“I have followed Collingwood since 1945 and this is the best side I have seen,” said Weideman.

“It’s a great thing.  It might not ever happen again to get four living captains together of premiership teams.

“It is a great thrill and it takes me back to my younger days when I was a mad Collingwood supporter when I lived in Fairfield.  I saw Lou Richards play in the 47s, 48s and 49s and he was my captain in 53. 

“This memory will live on forever and ever.”
Richards was adamant there is no reason why the Magpies can’t claim a consecutive premiership.

“They’re a good side, and why can’t they win it again?”

Maxwell, the youngest Pie of the foursome, received several words of wisdom from the combined 743 games of experience.

“Lou told me the Murray was good in his day with the ladies so Lou would float next to Murray and pick up what he handballed towards him.”
