Collingwood created a partnership with the New York affiliate in 2009 with the aim of growing the Magpie brand internationally.

The New York Magpies are an amateur Australian Football Club dedicated to growing football and the Magpie brand in New York and across the USA. Established in 1998, the New York Magpies are the largest Aussie Rules club in America and their continued success, both on and off the field, has made them the premier organisation within the USAFL.

The New York Magpies have started their USAFL season in a similar fashion to their Australian namesake, as they remain undefeated after four rounds.

Having taken out their first ever National Championship last year, the NY Magpies ensured that they avoided the dreaded premiership hangover with an unbeaten start to 2011. New York’s preparation was in stark contrast to the pre-season training that takes place in temperatures above and beyond 35° in Australia, as they went through their paces with snow on the ground.

After a pre-season visit from Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, New York travelled to Tampa to face Florida, where they played in 34° heat. In their closest game of the season, the Magpies were staring down the barrel of defeat when Florida leveled the scores early in the last quarter. Fortunately, three quick goals were enough to open up a decisive buffer, resulting in a 13-point Magpie win.

Defeats over Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore/Washington ensued, allowing the Magpies to end the first month with four successive victories.

The win over Boston was particularly memorable, as it saw the NY Magpies take out the traditional ANZAC Plate at Tibbets Brook Park.

Against Baltimore/Washington, the Magpies were tested by a tough and unrelenting Eagles opposition, who are considered to be a New York’s biggest challenger in the Eastern Conference. Although the Magpies managed to hold the Eagles scoreless, their 47-point win was not a true indication of how tough the match was, according to Magpies coach Glenn Ormsby.
