Collingwood legend Peter Moore says it would be a great thrill if he is able to present the Premiership Cup to son Darcy at Saturday’s AFL Grand Final.

The two-time Brownlow medallist was today announced as the Club’s cup presenter should the Pies be successful on Saturday, with Moore saying it had been in the works for a while.

It would be the first time a father has presented the cup to their son as captain.

“I think it’s a good photo opportunity for the club,” Moore laughed.

“I’s a massive thrill and it’s a great honour that the club has asked me to do it.

“Obviously me not winning one (Grand Final), I played in five for four losses and a draw all for Collingwood so to get the opportunity is it happens to present it to Darce will be fantastic.”

The game will be monumental for Darcy for a number of reasons. Not only will it be his maiden Grand Final appearance, but it will also be his 150th game for the Club.

As a first-year captain, Darcy has led the Pies all the way to the decider, a feat Peter achieved in his maiden captaincy year in 1981.

While the Pies lost that year’s Grand Final to Carlton, there’s obvious parallels to draw on for the father-son duo.

“It was a bit of a difficult year ’81 I had a hammy right before the finals so I played with an injured hamstring which I shouldn’t have done,” Moore said.

“But certainly to get there you’re the captain of the club and captaining them to a Grand Final which is a great honour and it’s ironic that Darcy has that same opportunity.”

Peter said Brisbane would pose a significant challenge, but believes the Magpies are primed for their first flag since 2010.

Having been ruck coach for the Club when they fell to the Lions in the 2002 decider, Moore knows better than most the September history between the two clubs, but says that won’t play a part on Saturday.

“Brisbane had been rivals in the past with finals but that’s not really relevant now,” he said.

“They’ve been the best two teams in the league all year and as Ross Lyon says, the ladder doesn’t lie and they were the best two teams.

“They’ve both got significant strengths so it’s just going to be a fantastic match, it won’t be a blowout it’ll be a tough game that you need to fight right to the end.”
