Collingwood have bounced back from last week’s disappointing VFL loss, getting the win over top of the table Box Hill by 17 points at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday.

It was the second time in three weeks that Collingwood’s VFL side have knocked down a top team, with a similar win over GWS in Round 8.

While the Hawks got the head start over the Pies in the first quarter, kicking four goals to Collingwood’s one, the inside 50 count was equal at the first break.

Realising they needed to be better at capitalising their forward 50 entries, Collingwood came out firing in the second term.

Despite the Hawks opening the second quarter with a goal in less than 30 seconds of play, it was Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell who got it going for the Pies, kicking his first goal in competitive footy in 448 days.

That was enough to get Collingwood going, with big man Mason Cox adding two goals to the tally, his first VFL game since the Round 5 Anzac-weekend clash against Essendon.

Fresh off his AFL debut last weekend, Will Hayes added a second goal to his name after kicking his first in the first quarter, a classy goal on the run after breaking through the pack.

A six-goal second term gave Collingwood a 12-point lead at the main break, but the Pies refused to take their foots off the pedal in the second half.

Cox and Hayes both brought their goal totals to three apiece in the third term, while mid-season draftee Roan Steele gave the Magpie Army plenty to be excited about with his end-to-end running capability on the wing.

After a lengthy stop of play due to a Box Hill injury, it looked like the Hawks were able to swing the momentum following two quick goals to AFL-listed Hawk Ned Reeves was able to bring the score to less than five points.

That was until third-year tall Oscar Steene flew out of nowhere for a huge mark over three Box Hill defenders. Topping off the mark with a classy goal, Steene’s teammates coming from everywhere to get around him.

A goal out of nowhere from VFL-recruit Brady Grey sealed the victory, with Collingwood finishing 17-point winners over Box Hill.
