While Sydney was too strong for the Pies’ AFL and VFL sides over the weekend, the Club’s VFLW and Championship Division Wheelchair sides both kicked off their seasons with fantastic victories.

Travelling out to Box Hill City Oval for a season-opener against the Hawks, the VFLW squad got off to a red-hot start with a 28-0 opening term.

They piled on three more goals to one in the second quarter to open up a 42-point half time lead, before running out comfortable winners.

Captain Dom Carbone was crucial with 24 touches and a goal, while ruck Erin Mckinnon was dominant in the 27-point victory with 51 hit outs.

Amelia Peck and Ashley Patton both kicked two majors.

The VFLW side will take on Sandringham on Saturday in Round 2.

On Sunday meanwhile, the Wheelchair seasons were kicked off, with the Championship team winning a thriller after the siren against Essendon, while the Community team went down by 16 points.

The defining moment for the Championship side came after the final siren, when Sam Maraldo calmly converted a clutch set shot to deliver Collingwood’s remarkable one-point victory.

The opportunity was created after captain Ben Jankovski snapped a crucial goal with 30 seconds left on the clock.

Collingwood surged forward in the last contest and were awarded a free disposal with only seconds remaining.

Maraldo was Collingwood’s leading goal scorer for the day, finishing with eight goals and the match-winner. Meanwhile, Will Crooks remained composed in the backline and made his opposition work hard to score.

In the Community Division, the side’s effort couldn’t be questioned despite a smaller line up in 2026.

They faced a tough challenge against the 2025 VWFL reigning premiers in the Bombers, but delivered a performance full of promising signs for the season ahead.

The highlight of the match came from centre Matthew Blunt, who demonstrated exceptional composure and vision throughout the entirety of the game.

Gathering cleanly under pressure, Blunt delivered a superb long handball from half-court to hit Andrew Paddle perfectly on the chest and become one of the best plays of the day.

Defender Tim O’Connor was also a standout, working tirelessly to push Essendon throughout the contest and transition the ball forward.

Both teams will face Hawthorn on Sunday.

From a VFL and AFL perspective, Sydney proved too strong in both games on Friday.

The VFL side was put on the backfoot early in their game at Tramway Oval, going into half time down by 31 points.

The Swans extended their lead in the third term to put the game beyond reach, however first-year midfielder Sam Swadling continued to try his heart out. He would finish with 40 touches and a goal in the 52-point loss.

Xavier Laverty, Iliro Smit and Jai Saxena all kicked two goals for the match.

Later in the day, the Pies’ AFL side narrowly went down at the SCG to the ladder-leading Swans.

A blistering five-goal first term set up a brilliant game, with the visitors setting the tone.

A wayward second term, where the black and white kicked one goal and seven behinds, saw the Pies continue their dominance, however it wasn’t fully reflected on the scoreboard in their 21-point lead at the main break.

The Swans came to life in the third quarter and led by a solitary goal with a quarter to go – a deficit that would remain at the final siren, with the Pies falling by just six points.

Isaac Quaynor was brilliant in defence with 22 touches and seven marks, while Jordan De Goey was pivotal, particularly early on, finishing with 29 disposals.

The VFL and AFL sides both take to the field on Saturday this week, with the former taking on Werribee in the morning, before the Pies host the Eagles in Scott Pendlebury’s record-breaking 433rd AFL match later in the day.
