Collingwood have kicked off their Friday night Marvel double header with a XX-point VFL win over North Melbourne.
First year Pie Zac McCarthy quickly attacked the sticks, kicking a behind in the opening minute before finding his first major shortly after with thanks to a kind bounce in an empty goal square.
The two teams continued to battle it out before the Roos were able to find their own, however the celebrations were short lived as mid-season draftee Mitch Podhajski booted one from 50 metres to bring his side back in front.
Playing an aggressive brand of footy, Collingwood continued their onslaught of goals with Will Hayes and Lachie Sullivan both getting their firsts to end the quarter 13 points in front.
While VFL co-captain Ben De Bolfo was commanding in defence to start the game, fellow co-captain Brady Grey opened his account to kick off the second quarter with a booming kick.
Defenders Wil Parker and Joel Cochran both had impressive moments at half back, with the young Pies being well set up to intercept the Kangaroos’ rebound 50 attempts.
Collingwood couldn’t capitalise as they struggled to get it past North’s own blockade of deep defenders and thus creating a back-and-forth tussle in the Pies’ front half for much of the second term.
North Melbourne were able to break the game open to end the half, with two late goals bringing them within a goal at the main break.
While the Pies were only able to add one major from six attempts in the second term, the third quarter proved to be more accurate with six goals added to the tally.
VFL leader Max Mahoney was the main contributor, adding three goals to the stat sheet while Jai Saxena, Josh Browne and former AFL Roo Will Phillips each had goals of their own to extend the Pies’ lead to 30 points at the final break.
Podhajski found his second from a set shot to kick off the fourth quarter, bringing his total to two for the evening.
While the rest of the quarter was quieter in front of goal, Mahoney found his fourth of the night to bring Collingwood home the XX-point victory at Marvel Stadium.
