Collingwood have overrun VFL ladder-leaders Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Friday, which saw first-year Pie Sam Swadling finish with an impressive 39 disposals.

While extending their streak to three in a row, the Pies have also put an end to the Cats’ 12-game win streak, which already firmed them as minor premiers with three rounds remaining heading into Friday’s clash.

While Geelong looked to put Collingwood away early in the second quarter as they held a firm 14-point lead at half time, VFL Senior Coach Matt Lokan’s men come out firing in the third term.

Two goals to Jack Buller in the third along with singles to Harry DeMattia, Roan Steele, Max Mahoney, Brady Grey, Will Hayes and Mitch Podhajski left the Cats stunned, who were goalless in the quarter.

Entering the fourth quarter with a 33-point lead, the Cats kicked two back-to-back goals to narrow the deficit.

Mahoney quickly answered with his third, while Podhajski kicked a further two in the final term to bring himself within one goal of top spot of the leading VFL goal scorer tally to bring the Pies a 28-point win at GMHBA Stadium.

The numbers:

Draftee Sam Swadling was prolific in the win, finishing with a team-high 39 disposals and nine clearances.

Jakob Ryan impressed in defence, having an equal game-high nine intercepts from 28 disposals.

Mid-season draftee Harrison Coe was strong in the ruck, finishing with 31 hit outs and five clearances, while Lachie Sullivan (31 disposals, seven inside-50s) continued his strong form.

Max Mahoney (three goals) and Mitch Podhajski (three goals) continued to be a threat in front of goals, while Harry DeMattia (two goals) is showing that a recent move to the forward line may be a fruitful one.

Collingwood will now turn their attention to their Round 20 clash with Essendon on Saturday 8 August at Windy Hill.
