COLLINGWOOD has slumped to a new low, failing to kick a goal for the first time in its AFLW history while Port Adelaide has kept its mathematical finals hopes alive with a 48-point thumping at Alberton Oval on Friday night.
A difficult season in front of goal for the Magpies went from bad to worse, with Sam Wright’s side failing to kick a goal and registering its lowest-ever score as the Pies slumped to a 1-10 record.
POWER v MAGPIES Full match coverage and stats
Imogen Trengove had Collingwood’s best opportunity to kick a goal seven minutes into the final term when she ran onto a loose ball in space, but she pushed her attempt at her first AFLW goal to the right of the goalpost.
The result improved the Power’s record to 5-6 with one home-and-away game remaining and added roughly 12 percentage points, but Port still needs a minor miracle to play finals.
There was little to suggest the lopsided contest that was to come in an opening term where the Magpies enjoyed several bright patches of play.
Goody kicked the first goal of the match three minutes into the first quarter, but the visitors enjoyed a bright patch, generating six inside 50s in a row at one stage.
But the Pies couldn’t manufacture a score from that dominance and were stung by goals to Lauren Young and Gemma Houghton, who put the home side up by 18 points at the first break.
It was Port’s turn to dominate without capitalising as the second quarter progressed, with the home side going inside 50 11 times to Collingwood’s one without kicking a goal.
That changed on the 12th attacking foray when Gemma Houghton added a second, with the next long inside 50 marked strongly by Scholz, who goaled from close range to stretch her team’s lead to 31 points at the main break.
Power prime mover Dowrick kicked the only goal of the third quarter as Collingwood lifted its intensity without reward on the scoreboard.
Port led by 35 points heading into the final term and while the home team kicked two goals to none, a few more were required to boost its percentage ahead of the last game of the regular season.
Collingwood’s clearance headache turns inside 50 woe
Collingwood averaged a league-worst 19 clearances a game heading into the match, with the Power third-ranked with an average of just over 25. Pies coach Sam Wright changed things up in a bid to combat that imbalance with Tarni White spending more time at stoppages and Britt Bonnici behind the ball. The tactic worked a treat, with the Magpies on 19 clearances by half-time to Port’s 10. But Wright’s charges couldn’t make the most of that turnaround, goalless in the first half and on the wrong side of a 24-10 inside 50 count.
