Collingwood's stirring fourth-quarter comeback proved futile, as it fell to Sandringham by a point at Victoria Park on Sunday.

The Magpies were headed at every change. Pulling out a victory seemed a tall order when Sandringham's first goal of the last term extended its lead to 19.

But the Pies clicked into gear when it was needed most. Four goals in succession, finished by a superb Daniel Wells effort by the boundary, earned the home side its first lead of the day.

Sandringham peppered the Magpies goal after they had taken the lead. Some desperate defending from Collingwood kept the visitors goalless in that spell, but ultimately the pressure told. A streak of five behinds in the final minutes was enough to sink the Pies to their fourth successive loss.
