About three weeks ago I made a visit to the Adult Mental Health Recovery Unit.
Adult Mental Health Recovery Unit provides medium to long term inpatient treatment and recovery for clients with unremitting and severe symptoms of mental illness. It represents the highest level of care on the continuum of mental health services and provides treatment, supervision and support for those whose needs cannot be met adequately by other available programs and services within the community. The AMHRU endeavour to assist patients to improve their quality of life by achieving their desired optimum level of functioning to facilitate community reintegration.
My friend and employee of AMHRU Emma Dorn, who organised the visit just recently wrote a short article about my visit in the ‘Mental Health Matters’ newspaper:As part of the health promotional program ‘Mind Body Life’ which we are currently running at Adult Mental Health Recovery Unit, we were fortunate enough to be visited by Collingwood Football player Harry O’Brien.
Harry provided AMHRU with a motivational talk on ‘mindfulness’, and the concept that people need to be passionate about their goals in order to have the motivation to achieve them. Harry talked about three main concepts:
“Passion”- where people need to find their passions and try to put positive energy into these by learning more about their passions, thinking more about their passions, and incorporating these passions into their everyday life.
“Pursuing a purpose”- where people need to have a plan of how they can achieve the bigger goal through having realistic and achievable smaller goal.
“Action”- where people then need to put these passions and plans into action in order to achieve their goals.
Harry talked about his success and how he used these three principles to get to where he is, and also helped clients to identify their goals and work through these concepts.
Harry then took the time to have a kick of the football in the courtyard with the AMHRU clients, showing how engaging in physical activity in a group setting can be beneficial for our physical and mental health. AMHRU thoroughly enjoyed the visit and hope this can be a stepping stone towards living a healthier lifestyle.
Oh and to let you also know we have been kicking the football almost daily in the courtyard since your visit- they all love it!
By Emma Dorn.
I must say the visit was definitely a completely new experience to me and has no doubt enriched my world view.
Until next time
Live for hope
