Collingwood celebrated its 120th Birthday on Sunday, and we asked supporters to tell us why they love the Magpies.

Some described what led them to supporting the Pies. Others looked at favourite players, and those who caught their eye as children. Many recognised a strong family connection with the football club that has been passed on from generation to generation.

Regardless of the answers, the overwhelming sentiment is that Collingwood supporters understand the special bond that exists between them and the club, and that regardless of their background, each fan is an important part of the Magpie Army.

All answers are unedited. More responses will be featured on the club's 120th Birthday page during the week.

"While I've only seen two day and one night premiership in my lifetime, I still remember exactly where I was as an eight year old watching pants with his broken thumb throw the ball aloft in 90. To have him taken from us a year later was a tragedy. However, my greatest moment as a Pies supporter was bearing witness to the final Smith St premiership, when no matter the result at Vic Park that day, it was a stirring moment when the whole stadium stood and applauded the Roy boys ass they made their way off the field for the last time against their closest rival, showing that no matter how one eyed we are, we always appreciate the history behind the rivalry, not just the rivalry itself.
HOT PIES!!!"

"I became a Collingwood supporter in 1962, after receiving a Collingwood jumper from my Uncle Norm. It was a hand me down from his son Graeme, who was also an avid Collingwood support until his unfortunated death. I have seen two Grand Finals live, both in 1977. Was at Victoria Park when Collingwood kicked 30.20 against Essendon. McKenna kicked 12. Plenty of highs and lows since, but that's football. Len Thompson a favourite as I grew up. Bill Picken, (who I still run into at the local cattle market) Phil Carman, Darren, Brownie, Monkey, Shaws, Richardsons, Tommy Hafey, Bob Rose, Rick Barham and we shouldn't forget exfamily Paul Cranage. 1990 the big one for me. 2010 great. Happy 120 years Collingwood, l can remember 50 of them as a supporter and member."

"There is life and death. Beyond that there is the Mighty Magpies. We are different to all the other barrackers. We are SUPPORTERS and that is why there can never be another team like our beloved Pies. Black and White has run through my veins ever since I arrived here in Australia as a child in 1969. Thanks to all the players I have seen since then for providing me with the lessons of ups and downs in footy. It relates to life and no one can be prouder of my team than I. We WILL win the flag this year."

"My first memories of the mighty Woodsmen when i was about 7 at a school footy clinic in country Vic and got to meet the late great Len Thompson after he won the Brownlow medal and thinking "what a giant" I reckon it was there and then Collingwood for life over 40 years the immortals McKenna Price Twiggy Barham Ronny W Picken the Shaws Browny No.42(legend)Monky Bucks all the current players and in fact anyone who has ever played for the mighty maggies thanks forever guys we are Numero Uno and prove it with our 16th Priemiership this year. Go Pies"

"I have been a Magpie supporter - extremely one-eyed - my whole life. (I'm 72) Our family are dyed in the wool 'Pie barrackers going back about 4 generations - in fact, probably from the beginning of the club. My paternal grandfather was a cohort of John Wren, the legendary (and unfairly much maligned) Collingwood benefactor back in the days when Wren ran what was then "Illegal" SP betting. My(grand) Pa was what was termed a "nitkeeper" - i.e. someone who looked out for the coppers. We are all very one-eyed supporters and proud of it."

"I've been a member for 10 years and i love this club. I don't remember how i become a collingwood supporter but i thank god it was my pies. I remember standing in the rain at vic park in 2002 watching the grand final on the big screen feeling gutted and thinking will i ever see a pies premiership. Fast forward 8 years to the 2010 premiership and that was one of the best days of my life. For the next 2 hours after that final siren is a moment i will never forget. I know 2012 is the year of the pies. Floreat Pica .

Oh and my birthday wish on behalf of the club is that Carlton suffer forever."

"i have been a supporter for 55 years, choosing to support the pies when arriving in australia from England in 1958! I joined as a Legends member as part of "Eddie's 1000" in 1999 and have supported the club since. The Collingwood Football Club has given me many happy times, socialising with other supports and yelling proudly for the boys and loving them no matter what the outcome. the pies are in my blood and my childrens blood and hopefully my future grandchildrens blood!

l love the pies, being side by side with the supporters and players and love the fact that it truely is us against the rest! Go pies!"

“You grow up, you move towns and jobs and your circle of friends change but the one constant is the Collingwood Football Club. Like life, the highs are amazing and the lows are devastating but it’s all worth it. There’s no passion like that of the love for a football team.

When you’re sitting in the MCG looking out at a sea of black and white and hearing the roar of the Collingwood chant, nothing else matters.
Happy Birthday Collingwood Football Club. May the next 120 years be as eventful and meaningful as the last 120.”
