The Peter Mac Cup is staged once a year to celebrate the commitment shown by Collingwood and Carlton to advancing the cause of cancer research.
The first game was in round six 1993 when Collingwood recorded a 36-point win thanks largely to Sav Rocca who booted six goals. The current ledger stands at 12 wins for Carlton and nine for Collingwood.
Since 2009, Collingwood's home game against Carlton has been dedicated to the Peter Mac Cup while the Blues' home game against the Magpies is reserved for the Richard Pratt Cup.
Since its inception, the match has raised over $1 million for cancer research.
The Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Peter Mac and supports the Centre through staging fundraising events such as the Cup Breakfast held this Thursday.
Peter Mac is the only specialist cancer hospital in Australia.
The centre is a comprehensive specialist oncology centre providing cancer services at the central site in Melbourne and through external clinics and satellites throughout Victoria.
Cancer touches almost all Australians either directly or indirectly sometime in our lives. It is a common problem, accounting for 30 per cent of all male deaths and 25 per cent of female deaths.
Today, thanks to the efforts of such institutions as Peter Mac, more than half of those diagnosed with cancer will have their disease brought under control, and many will be successfully treated.
Peter Mac has contributed to the ever-growing advances in cancer diagnosis and treatments.
Today in Australia, more than 60 per cent of people diagnosed with cancer survive in the long term. Peter Mac staff strive to ever increase that statistic. Sixty years ago, the survival rate was 25 per cent.

In 2014, the Peter Mac Cup will focus on raising awareness around paediatric cancers.
- Approximately 150 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in Victoria; as the sole provider of radiation therapy for children in the state, Peter Mac treats more than 100 of these children annually.
- The types of cancers that occur in children vary greatly from those seen in adults; children’s cancers occur in different parts of the body than adult cancers, they look different under the microscope and respond differently to treatment. How children’s cancers grow and develop is another difference between adults and children.
- Peter Mac is passionate about improving treatment options and the patient’s experience and reducing side effects, with research taking place from the laboratory through to the clinic.
