Voting for the Magpie Army Player of the Year Award is underway for 2015.
Collingwood Media looks at the performances of some of the players who were among the best in another Thursday night football classic.
Collingwood’s top performers
13. Taylor Adams
Statistics: 24 kicks, 14 handballs, 38 disposals, 7 clearances, 5 inside 50s.
Adams combined a career-high in disposals with a phenomenal goal from the boundary in the dying stages of the final quarter. Trailing by 12 points with ten minutes remaining in the match, Adams pounced on a loose ball and snapped perfectly over the umpires head. Earlier in the match he ticked over 30 possessions for the fifth time of his career and the third in 2015. He seemed unfazed by the wet conditions and at times was crucial in beating an opponent to the ball and gaining positive territory for the Magpies. Fingers remain crossed that Adams will be free to play next week after a moment of aggression against Port’s Justin Westhoff in the third term.
22. Steele Sidebottom
Statistics: 14 kicks, 17 handballs, 31 disposals, 14 contested possessions, 5 clearances.
Sidebottom was extremely clean with the ball in hand as he won the ball at will throughout a solid four quarter performance. He got better as the game went on, collecting 18 of his 31 possessions in the second half. The 31-disposal game marks the second consecutive week the 24-year-old has produced a 30-plus game. Always one to take the game on, Sidebottom showed some clever lateral thinking in the final term, lowering his eyes and finding teammates with a number of pinpoint passes in the wet.
18. Travis Varcoe
Statistics: 8 kicks, 12 handballs, 20 disposals, 3 rebound 50s, 7 tackles.
Varcoe was named Collingwood’s best player for a 20-disposal game with included a relentless attack on the ball for the entire four quarters. As noted by the Channel 7 commentators during the game, he once again brought an aggression to the game that wasn’t always evident during his eight year stint at Geelong. Varcoe kept his head in the heat of an intense third quarter. With seconds ticking down until the three-quarter-time siren he cleverly palmed the ball back into play towards Jamie EIlliott who goaled and cut Port’s lead back to 11 points.
34. Alan Toovey
Statistics: 6 kicks, 5 handballs, 11 disposals, 6 contested possessions, 5 tackles.
Forever a crucial member of the Collingwood defence, Toovey was tasked with the mammoth duty of lining up alongside Power livewire Chad Wingard. Wingard who has kicked 15 goals in the past four games, added another three against Collingwood, but arguably shared the honours with Toovey in the head-to-head battle. One who is rarely beaten in a one-on-one contest, Toovey played in front and often was first to the ball. His clean skills allowed him collect two marks from opposition kicks and two rebound 50s as he prevented a number of Port Adelaide scoring bursts.
