The Pies got the quick start they needed which gave them the confidence all game.

Being in front at every point in the game, Collingwood set the tone for the match.

Monique DeMatteo and Hannah Bowey got the first two from the day, in almost the exact same spot in the pocket.

Jordan Membrey got the third for the day in the second quarter, giving the Pies a 19-1 lead at half time.

Casey came back after half time with a bang, booting two and closing the margin to just 7 at three quarter time.

With some brilliant defence work, the Pies were able to maintain the lead and stop Casey from scoring.

Monique DeMatteo booted another clever goal, giving the Pies the edge and ultimately the win at the final siren.

Assistant coach, Emma Kent was impressed with how the team performed against a side like Casey.

“The girls know what true grit is like and they just dug deep when it mattered, particularly with the conditions that we were faced with coming up with a top team”, Kent said.

“It’s the work behind that win that counts. The girls need to acknowledge all the work they’ve been doing through training, all the stuff they do outside of training and it’s come together on the day”, Kent said.

“We knew what the conditions were likely to be so territory was the key. Obviously nullifying their disposal efficiency and that’s just through our physicality and our tackle pressure and just have a little bit of belief we could do as a team”, Kent said.

Hannah Bowey played an incredible game, earning herself “player of the match”.

Bowey finished with fifteen disposals, four marks, eight contested possessions and a goal.

“Hannah must have had extra grippo on her hands, it just came to her. She placed herself in really good positions and helped the midfielders in the contest and took advantage of the opportunities that she had”, Kent said.

Collingwood take on Western Bulldogs this Saturday which will be part of a double header with Collingwood’s VFL team.

The VFLW begin at 10am at the AIA Centre followed by the VFL at 2:05pm.
