Collingwood will be searching for their first win of the 2023 NAB AFLW season when they take on Fremantle on Sunday afternoon at Victoria Park.

Despite a strong start, the Pies went down by 42 points to reigning premiers Melbourne in last week’s season opener.

The Dockers won their opening game of the season against West Coast last week, however the Pies will be confident in bouncing back after comfortably beating the visitors in their most recent encounter.

Collingwood also has a strong record at Victoria Park, having won 11 out of their 14 games at the venue since it became their permanent home ground in 2021.

Last time they met

The Pies were stingy in defence when they travelled to Fremantle Community Bank Oval in October last year, restricting the Dockers to just three behinds in a 29-point win. Sabrina Frederick was strong up forward with two goals, while Ruby Schleicher starred with 19 disposals in the game in her hometown. The win all but confirmed the Pies’ place in the season seven finals series.

Players to watch

Captain Brianna Davey returned with a bang last week, gathering 35 disposals and kicking a goal in her first game back from an ACL injury. Vice-captain Brittany Bonnici also returned from her own ACL recovery and finished with 17 disposals. The pair shared much of their rehab journey together and are aiming to lead the Pies to their inaugural AFLW premiership. 21-year-old Tarni Brown is also tipped for a breakout season as she spends time between the midfield and forward half, while Jordyn Allen is set to continue her form from last season into 2023.

Team news

Star forward Eliza James will miss the clash after suffering a syndesmosis injury in the loss to the Demons, replaced in the squad by ruck Imogen Barnett. Erica Fowler drops out of the side with former WBBL cricketer Emily Smith making her way into the squad in search of her second career AFLW game.
