Round 16

Collingwood will blood young forward Charlie West, while defender Charlie Dean returns for his first game of 2025 in the Pies’ Round 16 clash with West Coast at Marvel Stadium.

Defender Billy Frampton (calf) and forward Beau McCreery (hamstring) are the exclusions from last week’s team.

Selected with pick 50 in the 2024 Telstra National Draft, the 19-year-old has booted 25 goals in 10 games, including six goals in last week’s win over Sandringham.

The final of that six-goal bag was a match-winner after the siren to give the Pies’ VFL team its seventh win of 2025.

Collingwood Coach Craig McRae outlined West’s strengths while fronting media on Thursday morning.

“He’s got a great energy about him,” McRae said.

“His contested marking is his biggest strength. He’s got sticky fingers.

“Six goals is one thing but he’s doing repeated high-performance at VFL-level, and he deserves his opportunity.”

Dean hasn’t played at AFL-level since Collingwood’s Round 24 win over Melbourne last season.

The 24-year-old is averaging 18 disposals and seven marks at VFL-level this season, including a best-on-ground performance where he collected 23 disposals and 13 marks against top-of-the-table Box Hill.

Vice-Captain Brayden Maynard will miss the clash as he continues to build his training loads following a plantar fascia rupture in the Pies’ Round 11 win over North Melbourne.

McRae explained the defender’s absence from the team.

“Our physios and high-performance team think he’s just not quite there,” McRae said.

“He’s done the load. If anything, they’ve sort of overloaded him a little bit, he’s a bit sore.

“We just don’t want to put any stress on his body and to potentially create other things.

“Maybe it’s conservative, but he won’t play this week.”

In his eighth AFL season, forward Brody Mihocek has been selected to play his 150th match.

The 32-year-old has booted 255 goals, winning the Gordon Coventry Award for Collingwood’s leading goal-kicker five times from 2019-2023 with his best return in a season coming in the Pies’ premiership year, where he kicked 47 goals.

Defenders Wil Parker and Oleg Markov and forward Will Hayes will be the emergencies for the clash.

The tactical substitution will be selected from the bench and will be named 60 minutes before the first bounce.

Collingwood fans can watch the game live on Fox Footy and kayosports.com.au, with the first bounce at 7:35pm (AEST).
