Collingwood key forward duo Jack Buller and Charlie West had a day out in the Pies’ second VFL win of the season, with the pair notching a combined nine goals at the KGM Centre on Friday afternoon.

What started as a back-and-forth tussle in the opening quarter, midfielder Lachie Sullivan was the one to get Pies rolling, kicking the Pies’ first of the afternoon.

An early knee injury to Collingwood’s Reef McInnes in the opening 10 minutes saw the Pies’ need to stand tall as the 23-year-old defender took no further part in the match.

Having quickly become an on-field leader for the young VFL side, it was Buller who willed his side on, quickly followed by a major from West.

Sullivan found himself on the end of another goal to end the first term trailing by a goal.

While Essendon started the second quarter with another quick goal to extend their lead, a two-goal haul to West and Buller along with singles from Sullivan and Zavier Maher saw Collingwood end the half with a five-point lead.

Bobby Hill – who missed most of the first half after copping cut above his eye in the opening quarter – set the tone early in the third quarter by turning on his signature lightning speed to clear his opponent and find the goals.

Buller again followed with his fourth of the day, before Essendon turned on the jets to bring the game back into their terms.

Entering the final quarter trailing by a point, the Pies had to dig deep to fight their way back into the contest.

Buller’s fifth goal sparked the comeback early, before another two majors from West helped seal the deal and bring Collingwood their second VFL victory of the season with a 11-point win over Essendon.
