Collingwood champion Steele Sidebottom has called time on his 18-year career, with the 35-year-old to finish up at the end of the Magpies’ season.

Sidebottom informed teammates, AFLW players and Club staff of his decision in a team meeting this afternoon. 

With a career for the history books, Sidebottom will go down as one of the greatest Magpies to have played in the black and white.

Sidebottom sits second in the Club’s total game tally with 373 and counting as well as being only the second-ever Collingwood player to have played over 350 games.

He is a two-time Premiership player, two-time Copeland Trophy winner, has two Anzac Day Medals to his name and was selected in the 2018 All Australian team.

Alongside close friend and teammate Scott Pendlebury, the pair hold the AFL’s record for the most games played as teammates, currently sitting at 339.

Away from his impressive accolades, Sidebottom’s influence on Collingwood has been immense.

Sidebottom served as the Club’s vice-captain for eight seasons and even after stepping away from the formal leadership group, has continued to play a key role in educating and influencing the next generation of Collingwood players.

While Sidebottom built his reputation on the field through his elite skills, tireless endurance and calmness in big moments, it is off the field where ‘Sidey’ is truly cherished for his sharp humour, selfless care for those around him and down-to-earth character.

Reflecting on his incredible career, Sidebottom thanked those who had supported him along the journey.

“As a young kid from ‘Tally’ (Tallygaroopna), I could never imagine I’d finish my AFL career with over 370 games, two Premierships and 18 years of memories,” Sidebottom said.

“When I look back on my time at Collingwood, I'll remember the people. So many teammates, coaches, staff and volunteers have invested their time and energy into helping me along the way. I'm grateful for every one of them.

“To the Magpie Army, playing in front of you is an incredible privilege – there is nothing like running out for a game knowing our fans are behind us. Your loyalty, passion and love for the black and white are what make Collingwood such a special place.

“I feel incredibly lucky to have spent my entire AFL career at Collingwood. Watching Matilda, Ned and Beau become part of the Club has been one of the greatest joys of my career. We'll always be grateful for the love and support we've received from the Collingwood community.

“There’s still more exciting football ahead of us over the coming weeks. Get behind us and let’s finish off 2026!”

Collingwood Senior Coach Craig McRae congratulated Sidebottom on his career.

“On behalf of everyone at Collingwood, we want to congratulate Steele on everything he has achieved throughout his career but also to thank him for all he has given the Club,” McRae said.

“Steele's football speaks for itself. His consistency, professionalism and ability to perform under pressure have been remarkable throughout his career. But for me, his greatest strength is his character. He's authentic, caring, humble and has a wonderful way of bringing people together. That's why he's so respected by everyone at our Club.

“We couldn't be more grateful for what Steele and his family have given to the Collingwood Football Club. We wish Steele, Alisha, Matilda, Ned, Beau and the entire Sidebottom family all the best for the future. Their contribution to our Club has been immense and they will always be welcomed home at Collingwood.”

Collingwood President Barry Carp thanked Sidebottom for his contribution to Collingwood. 

“Steele has been an outstanding contributor to our Club and leaves behind a legacy that will influence and shape the next generations of Collingwood footballers,” Carp said.

“He embodies everything you want in a footballer and a leader. His professionalism, humility and commitment to the team have set an exceptional standard over many years. The impact he's had on our Club extends well beyond his performances on the field.

“Steele has created lasting memories for supporters and has been a trusted leader through some of the club's most important moments. We are incredibly grateful for everything he has given Collingwood.”
