The AFL has announced that Collingwood will join Essendon in wrapping up the home and away season on a Sunday afternoon at the MCG.

The match will begin at 3.20pm EST.

Since 2009, the AFL has only confirmed the schedule for the final round with a handful of weeks remaining, rewarding the sides which are best placed to launch a tilt at the Premiership each season.

With the AFL finalising its fixture after 18 rounds, Collingwood sits one game adrift from the top eight in eleventh position on the ladder, and Essendon in fifteenth (four games outside the eight).

The round 23 fixture is structured in a manner that will allow the clubs likely to finish in the top four an adequate break between their final home and away game and their first final, while taking into account any potential travel factors involved.

Collingwood has enjoyed a recent run of success against Essendon, winning ten of its twelve meetings since round 14, 2009.

The two clubs last met in round 23 in 2012, when the Magpies triumphed by 32 points.
