Retired Collingwood champion Dane Swan expects his injured foot never to be the same again, but the extent of his recovery won't be known until Christmas.

Following surgery last week, he will continue to rehab at Collingwood before heading off overseas in 2017 for what he has already described as a gap year.

"They said it will never be the same again [but whether it is] 95 per cent or 40 per cent [recovery we don't know]," Swan said.

He will need to have his dancing shoes on as he aims to head to Californian music festival Coachella, then to Europe, then to the Burning Man festival in Nevada in late August before returning.

Speaking after watching the documentary that traces his last season in AFL football 'Last Call' produced by Collingwood Media, Swan said he was a completely different person in 2016 without the mental stress of playing weekly.

"In a way it was probably easier but gameday it was hard watching the boys go around and not being able to do anything," Swan said.

Although the 32-year-old entered 2016 suspecting it might be his last season he didn't expect the end to happen so quickly.

As luck would have it, his year ended in his first contest in the first game of the season when he broke his leg and shattered his foot.

In Swan's words captured in the documentary, his foot was "f-----", with the moment and its immediate aftermath captured in the compelling production.

Swan doesn't attempt to hide the fact his approach was different to many in this era, but he also reveals his love for the game and how much he missed being out there with his mates playing the game that dominated his life up until now.

'Last Call' produced by Collingwood Media and launched on collingwoodfc.com.au on Thursday night at 7pm traces Swan's attempt to return and his eventual decision to give it away after he realised his foot would not survive another season.

Viewers see his preparation for life after football, his rational yet humourous approach to surgery and his parents Bill and Deidre recalling Swan's passion for his mates and performing well.

"I just panicked" - Friends and family recall their original reaction to Dane Swan's career-ending injury.

Now that it's over, Swan doesn't expect to become a coach.

"Never say never, but it is as close to never as you can get," Swan said.

"I'm just a Collingwood supporter now."

The documentary 'Last Call' will premiere on collingwoodfc.com.au at 7pm on Thursday October 6.
