Leon Davis' sublime goal in round 22 against Fremantle has been named the 2008 'Goal of the Year'.
Late in the second quarter at Subiaco Oval, Davis tackled Des Headland on the far wing, scooped up the ball in his right hand, eluded Docker defender Andrew Browne and kicked truly from 45 metres out on the boundary.
Davis saluted the crowd with his trademark finger-waggle and even had the home supporters cheering in appreciation.
Channel Seven commentator Dennis Cometti finished off Bruce McAvaney’s comment with "(This will be a goal, it is a goal)…of the season”.
Davis' former teammate, Nathan Buckley, followed up Commetti’s comment with “That has to be goal of the year".
“I don’t want to be biased but I was watching him defend and that was (actually) about his fifth or sixth effort when he got to that”, Buckley added.
Round 22 was Davis’ fourth goal of the year nomination for 2008.
The 27-year-old, who had a career-best season and finished fourth in Collingwood's Copeland Trophy, will receive the Phil Manassa medal in recognition of his efforts.
He will also enjoy the use of a Toyota TRD Aurion for 12 months and as part of its ongoing commitment to grassroots football, Toyota will also award $5000 to Davis’ grassroots club; the Maddington Football Club.
Essendon's Matthew Lloyd won the Alex Jesaulenko medal for 'Mark of the Year' for his big pack mark against Melbourne in round 18.
Both awards were decided by the All Australian selection committee from the pool of weekly winners as voted by footy fans at afl.com.au and the AFL’s expert panel.
