Gavin Brown assisted senior coach Mick Malthouse for six seasons before taking up the role as coach of the club’s newly established stand-alone VFL side for the 2008 season.

Collingwood List Assessment: Numbers 11-20

11. Shane O’Bree:  In his 11th season of senior football, Shane O’Bree won the Darren Millane Award nominated by the team as the best clubman.  He finished the year averaging 19 disposals, was ranked first at the club in total centre-clearances (101) and second at the club in total contested possessions (183) and finished ninth in the Copeland Trophy.

Gavin Brown says: Had a fantastic season in the middle clearance-wise and had a very consistent and even year from Shane.

12.  Shannon Cox: The 22-year-old played six games this season including the last four games of the year.  A defender who played in the midfield on occasion, Cox is a chance to be in the starting 22 by round one 2009.

He really put his name up there particularly towards the end of the year when he played two finals games.  He really needs to improve on his body work but his flair and his ability offensively is second to none.

13.  Dale Thomas:  Thomas played 22 games this season averaging 16 possessions and ranked fifth at the club in contested possessions.  23 goals this year saw his career total tally to 52 in his three seasons.   Finished eighth in the Copeland Trophy, Thomas could see more midfield action come 2009.

Proved what a valuable player he is for the club.  He didn’t necessarily have an outstanding season for his standards but certainly is a class act.  When he doesn’t have the ball in his hands, unlike a lot of players particularly at his age, he is absolutely fantastic from a defensive point of view and when the ball is in dispute he is exceptional.

14.  Shane Wakelin:  After 252 games (158 at Collingwood), the veteran defender announced his retirement to the AFL community at the end of the season.  Wakelin appeared in 20 games this year and was vital to the younger Magpie defenders’ development over the course of the season.

He was incredible to keep playing at such a high level.  Every year you think it’s going to be his last and he keeps going.  So it’s a credit to him and he played some really big games this year particularly on Barry Hall
.

15.  Chris Egan:  Managed only two games this year before playing most of the season in the VFL.  Egan was not offered a playing contract for the 2009 season.

Unfortunately just couldn’t quite become the player that he hoped and we hoped he would be at this club.  He moves on but showed enormous amount of ability when he had the ball but needs to work on some other areas of the game.

16. Nathan Brown:  Received a Rising Star nomination in his round 10 match against West Coast, the 19-year-old played 23 games in his first season of senior footy.  Brown played on forwards Matthew Pavlich, Jonathon Brown and Lance Franklin and proved he could handle the big guns of AFL.

He had a fantastic season particularly playing on the calibre players that he did.  Played on opponents such as Pavlich, Franklin and the like so it was a massive job for a young kid and he handled himself really well.  There is a lot of upside to him.

17. Scott Burns:  A champion of the club, Burns captained the team for one year before announcing his retirement after the finals series.  The 33-year-old played 17 games this year before succumbing to a calf injury in round 21 which saw him miss the finals campaign.

Well what can you say about Scotty?  Had another really good season this year, disappointing he couldn’t play towards the end of the season when we really needed him.  He showed what a great leader he was and a deserving captain.

18. Martin Clarke:  Ranked fourth at the club in rebound-50s, Clarke has proved a success in the Magpies recruitment process from Ireland.  The 20-year-old was a consistent force in defence playing in 22 games this year.

He played one game in the VFL early on in the season so he just struggled a little bit early.  But then really found his feet and became a marquee player for the club playing predominantly as a half-back flanker taking dangerous opponents and doing a terrific job.

19. Cameron Wood:  Recruited from Brisbane in 2007, Wood provided a solid back-up for the ruck position 13 times this year.  The 204-cm ruckman used 2008 as a development year playing eight games in the VFL and will keep the pressure on Fraser and Chris Bryan during the preseason.

It was his fourth year in the system and first year for Collingwood.  Showed some really good things including being a capable mark at either end of the ground particularly up forward when he went there at times.  He is a really capable ruckman and gives first use to his on-ballers.  Needs to work on match fitness but could potentially be a great ruckman for the club.

20. Ben Reid:  The eighth overall pick in the 2006 draft, Reid was off to a promising start this season before a broken foot sustained in round 13 saw him miss the remainder of the season.  The 195 centimetre forward played three games this season and will be a positive inclusion to Collingwood’s line-up next year.

Disappointingly had a knee injury that kept him out for the season.  He was able to play the very last game for the VFL and played fairly well at centre half back.  Showed he could play at either end of the ground and will be an exceptional player.
