Magpies flag their intentions
Brent Macaffer says the unfurling of the 2010 pennant won't distract Collingwood from its aim of going back to back
The Magpies waited until round three to unveil their flag after a low-key round one home game against Port Adelaide at Etihad Stadium and an away clash with North Melbourne the following week.
Macaffer, who has been omitted for the match, says the MCG occasion, which will coincide with the Pies' first blockbuster of the year, will give players a brief chance to reflect before they refocus on the task ahead.
"It was a great time when we won that flag. I loved it at the time and it will probably bring back a few memories and motivate us to strive on this year so we can have that feeling again," he told afl.com.au this week.
"It's something we want to achieve again as a group, so it will be great in that sense."
He said the event was more for the supporters than players and wouldn't affect the team in its bid for a third straight win this season.
"I suppose for the playing group it's not something we've spoken about or even really thought too much about," he said.
"It's more for the fans to come along and they'll appreciate a lot more than probably we will because we've moved on and we're concentrating on this year.
"It's great for the fans to see that and hopefully they get down there and they can enjoy that, but we just want to focus on the game itself and get the job done."
Without disrespecting the Pies' first two opponents, Macaffer said they were looking forward to the challenge of facing the Blues a week after they were in full flight against Gold Coast.
"Carlton has been around the mark the last couple of years, played finals and they're looking like pressing to be a top four team this year," he said.
"To come up against them when they're in good nick will be good for us - to have a challenging game early on to see if we can keep going the way we've been going."
Macaffer was the Pies' first substitute player for the season but played a full game against the Kangaroos last Saturday.
He said he expected to fulfil a variety of positions this year as he did in the Magpies' premiership season.
"On the weekend, I pretty much did the same [as last year]. I started down forward and then went on the wing for a little bit and then spent the whole last quarter down back," he said.
"I think having three guys on the bench now I'll probably find myself doing that same thing throughout the year as well, probably pinch-hitting wherever Mick needs me to go to relieve a few guys so they can have that break on the bench."
